The licence difference
If you pass in an automatic, your licence lets you drive automatic cars only. Pass in a manual and you can drive both. That is the main reason many learners still pick a manual car.
If you know you will only ever drive an automatic – or you have a medical reason to avoid a clutch – an automatic licence is a perfectly good choice.
How quickly will I learn?
Automatic pupils usually need fewer hours because there is no clutch control, gear changes or stalling to master. That frees your attention for observation, planning and road positioning.
Manual pupils spend more early lessons on moving off, hill starts and clutch control, but gain a skill that keeps every car open to them.
How many driving lessons do I need? What does it cost?
At White & Red, manual and automatic lessons cost exactly the same, so you can choose based on what suits you rather than price.

Try one two-hour lesson and talk it through with your instructor. Many nervous drivers start confidently in an automatic; others enjoy the control of a manual.
